There were 311 Boeing B-29B models built at Bell-Atlanta, but not all of them were used by the 315th. Below I have listed all of the B-29B serial numbers as shown on Joe Baugher's website. This page is an attempt to document the aircraft that were used by the 315th to include group, squadron, aircraft name (if known) and crew information. From Bob Mann's book, The B-29 Superfortress - A Comprehensive Registry of the Planes and Their Missions, it appears that the 315th also flew other models of the B-29.

It should be noted that many, but not all, aircraft had names and/or artwork applied.
Data has been gathered from various sources including:

  • List of B-29B serial numbers came from Joseph Baugher web page that lists USAAS/USAAC/USAAF/USAF Aircraft Serials. I extracted the B-29B model serial numbers from his lists.

  • Mr. Robert A. Mann compiled the book, The B-29 Superfortress - A Comprehensive Registry of the Planes and Their Missions, that documents all B-29 production serial numbered aircraft, including disposition of the aircraft where he could uncover the information from his research. Bob has graciously granted me permission to use information from his book, that he has gathered from over 19 years of painstaking research.

  • 315th Bomb Wing Association History Book, A New Chapter in Air Power, Second Edition.

  • Official Orders, 315BW, Operations Order Number 8, 23 March 46; lists those aircraft transferred to the 501st Bomb Group. This action was part of the consolidation of the four bomb groups into a single bomb group or the 501st Consolidated Bomb Group. Later, in 1946, the 315th Bomb Wing was renamed the 315th Composite Wing and moved to Japan. In August 1948, the 315th Composite Wing was renamed 315th Air Division. The 501st remained on Northwest Field to "close up shop." See the bottom of the list for several other aircraft of the 315th BW transferred to the 501st.

  • Microfilm copies of the official histories of the 315th Bomb Wing, 16th Bomb Gp, 331st Bomb Group, 501st Bomb Group and 502nd Bomb Group. The microfilm rolls were obtained from the Air Force Historical Research Agency (AFHRA).

  • Photos of the mission boards for the last mission flown by the 315th in the war.
